    Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a non-invasive short-term therapy designed to complement conventional therapeutic techniques and treat individuals who have struggled with traditional forms of addiction treatment therapies in the past. EMDR has been found to be especially effective for individuals suffering from trauma-related conditions as well as those struggling with anxiety, eating disorder issues, chronic pain, and depression.

  • Jason Powers, MD
    Jason Powers, MDChief Medical Officer
    Dr. Powers joined Right Step and Promises Austin as chief medical officer in 2006. Originally trained and board certified in family medicine, Dr. Powers re-dedicated his career to helping addicts and their families after he personally faced addiction in 2003. He is now also board certified in addiction medicine and develops programs that help addicted individuals and their families embrace the healing path of recovery. Dr. Powers has been recognized four times as a top addiction doctor by H Texas Magazine, and is currently secretary/treasurer of the Texas chapter of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and a local expert for The Partnership at Drugfree.org. Dr. Powers is also the author of the comprehensive book about addiction When the Servant Becomes the Master.
  • Stevie Stanford, PhD
    Stevie Stanford, PhDClinical Director
    Dr. Stanford is a licensed psychologist with an extensive background in family work, substance abuse treatment, working with the LGBTQ community, and trauma resolution, particularly eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). She earned her doctorate in counseling psychology and master's degree in community counseling from Northern Arizona University. While working on her doctorate, she developed a measurement tool called the EDAM (Eating Disorder Assessment for Men) to help measure eating disorders, muscle dysmorphia and body image issues in men. Dr. Stanford brings to Promises Austin a wealth of knowledge as a certified clinical supervisor in a dual diagnosis residential treatment setting. Having worked as a clinical director in other residential programs, her strengths also lie in clinical enrichment, program management and curriculum development. She believes the foundation of effective treatment is a trusting therapeutic relationship and that experiencing new things and challenging ourselves is how we grow.
